Whether you receive benefits, manage payroll, or work for yourself, understanding these updates can help you prepare your budget. Here’s a breakdown of the 2027 Social Security amounts and how they compare with 2026.

How Much Will Social Security Benefits Increase in 2027?

The 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, commonly called COLA, is 3.6%, compared with 2.8% for 2026.

The increase begins with Social Security benefits payable in January 2027. Increased Supplemental Security Income payments for January will arrive on December 31, 2026, because January 1 is a federal holiday. See the SSA’s COLA announcement.

For illustration, a gross monthly Social Security benefit of $2,000 would increase by approximately $72, bringing it to $2,072 before deductions.

Social Security Taxable Wage Limit Increases to $192,300

The maximum earnings subject to Social Security tax will rise from $184,500 in 2026 to $192,300 in 2027—an increase of $7,800.

The Social Security tax rate remains 6.2% for employees, with employers paying a matching 6.2%. For someone earning at or above the taxable maximum in both years, the higher wage limit means:

  • Employees: An additional $483.60 in annual Social Security withholding.
  • Employers: An additional $483.60 in matching Social Security tax per affected employee.
  • Self-employed individuals: An additional $967.20 in the Social Security portion of self-employment tax, assuming net earnings subject to that tax reach the maximum in both years.

Business owners should account for the higher wage ceiling when preparing 2027 payroll budgets. These calculations address Social Security tax only; Medicare taxes are separate. The rates and wage ceiling appear in the SSA’s 2027 fact sheet.

Earnings Needed for Social Security Credits Will Rise

In 2027, the earnings required to receive one Social Security credit, also called a quarter of coverage, will increase to $1,970, up from $1,890 in 2026.

This threshold is relevant to people building their earnings records toward Social Security eligibility, including part-time workers and individuals with intermittent employment.

2027 Social Security Earnings Limits for Working Retirees

If you collect retirement benefits while continuing to work, your earnings may affect your benefit payments before you reach full retirement age.

Retirement status2026 annual earnings limit2027 annual earnings limit
Under full retirement age for the entire year$24,480$25,560
Reaching full retirement age during the year$65,160$67,920

For people under full retirement age throughout 2027, Social Security generally withholds $1 in benefits for every $2 earned above $25,560.

For people reaching full retirement age during 2027, Social Security generally withholds $1 for every $3 earned above $67,920, counting only earnings before the month full retirement age is reached.

Beginning with the month you reach full retirement age, earnings no longer reduce your retirement benefits. SSA also recalculates benefits to give credit for months when payments were reduced or withheld because of excess earnings. Learn more about receiving Social Security benefits while working.

SSI Federal Payment Standards Increase in 2027

Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, provides assistance to eligible individuals who meet the program’s requirements. The federal monthly payment standards will increase as follows:

The SSI student earned income exclusion limits will also rise:

  • Monthly limit: $2,500, up from $2,410.
  • Annual limit: $10,080, up from $9,730.

These exclusion limits matter for qualifying students who work while receiving SSI.

Social Security Disability Earnings Thresholds for 2027

The following disability-related earnings thresholds will increase:

Substantial gainful activity: non-blind individuals$1,690$1,770
Substantial gainful activity: blind individuals$2,830$2,950

If you work while receiving disability benefits, review the applicable program rules before changing your hours or earnings. These thresholds serve different purposes and should be considered within your specific benefits situation.
